Gerard Schalkwijk’s total auction marks the end of one of the most impressive periods in the Dutch marathon pigeon racing world. Names like Lady In The Dark, Orange Oil, Double Barcelona, and Lady Richelle brought Gerard Schalkwijk lasting fame, with Schalkwijk pigeons known for their unique ability to “night fly.” This led to national titles and NPO victories, a winning streak that comes to a close as Gerard now pursues a life where pigeon racing no longer takes center stage.

The legacy of these pigeons was continued by top racers such as Goldplay (1st Nat. S3 Perigueux), Night Goldplay (1st NPO Perigueux), and Orange King (6th, 14th, 75th NPO in 2024). These champions, along with all of the best breeders and racers, will be offered in an extraordinary auction on PIPA, featuring a small group of young pigeons bred from these heroes.

Gerard believes in the value of genetic testing to optimize his breeding colony. DNA tests have been conducted on almost all of his older breeders, although the race pigeons have yet to be tested. Many of the young pigeons also have DNA profiles, and it is notable that almost all of the top breeders possess a unique genetic makeup. Furthermore, a large percentage of the colony carries special genetic traits. Even among the young pigeons bred in 2024, the genetic types show promising signs of success.
