Johan developed a passion for pigeon racing as a teenager, though it often took a backseat to his other hobbies. It wasn't until around the turn of the century that Johan truly committed to the sport, starting with the second round of pigeons from his cousin Leo Smedts of Morkhoven. Through his friend Wim Van Thielen, the son of the late Louis van Thielen—a renowned sprint and middle-distance racer—Johan acquired eggs from top-performing widowers. Initially, Johan focused solely on sprint races, but by 2010, his attention shifted to middle-distance and one-day long-distance events
