Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek says the people who work on the front line of environmental protection “do it for love”.

“They love nature; they want to protect and restore our natural environment,” she said during Question Time on Tuesday.

“But when you look at the sort of challenges they face – when we came in, the Australian Institute for Marine of Science doing great science, falling apart, facing 100 job losses, leaky roofs, laboratories they couldn’t use.

“We doubled their funding, and now we want to better look after their scientists.”

The government confirmed it would double its funding for Australia’s world-leading marine science agency for the next four years in April last year.
