I had the opportunity to take a small part in a beautiful charity event for Ukrainian refugee children (and their moms). My small contribution was to teach the children about racing pigeons. ???? It was a blast! We learned about training pigeons, looked at the development of pigeon embryos through the egg shell, talked about pigeon leg bands, held pigeons (of course!) and had a name contest for one boy pigeon and one girl pigeon. The winning names were: Anastasia (girl) and капуста “Cabbage” (boy). Each kid got to take one new 2023 leg band as a memento ???? We ended by releasing Anastasia, капуста, Kevin, Lyft, and Max to fly home. The kids seemed pretty excited. Whether I converted some young kids to pigeons or not, I’m grateful for the opportunity to add a little joy to the lives of these beautiful children who have experienced troubles and hardship that no child should and of no fault of their own.

MIND-BLOWINGLY, the day-long event—complete with tons of donations for the refugee families (clothing, toys, art supplies, games, puzzles, etc), snacks, games, catered lunch, several other activities in addition to the pigeon one—was conceived, organized, and directed by ONE TEENAGE GIRL. I’m inspired and get misty-eyed when I think of that. ❤️
