Ever since Flor Engels started racing pigeons in 1947 the Engels name has stood for top performances on the Provincial and National level. Nevertheless, the Engels story has humble beginnings. Flor Engels was a hard working businessman who focused entirely on growing vegetables. Long days of working in the fields called for a hobby to relax after a day’s work and racing pigeons was just the thing. Having both his sons, Jules and Jos, joining him in his hobby was the cherry on the cake. The original Engels’ stock consisted of Van Alphen birds, which Flor had gotten from his older brother Jef. Father and sons Engels enthusiastically tackled the sprint races and it didn’t take long before they became a very dominant regional force. But winning all the time can become pretty boring. Flor, Jos and Jules went looking for a new challenge and switched to middle distance racing. Soon they were just as dominant in this field as they had been on the sprint races. Nevertheless word of their incredible performances didn’t really go beyond their own region. The reason for that was simple: success or no success, racing pigeons was a hobby for the Engels family, not a business. Growing vegetables was their livelyhood; making publicity for their loft was the last thing on their mind.
