Keir Starmer will face Kemi Badenoch at PMQs today, as criticism mounts over the alleged cost of the looming Chagos Islands deal.

The UK had reached an agreement on returning sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius with the previous Mauritian government last year, but Ramgoolam insisted on renegotiating the deal when he came to power in November. Reports currently suggest that the deal has cost £18 billion, which the Environment Secretary Steve Reed has denied.

Elsewhere, Rachel Reeves has been warned she must either increase taxes or cut spending after economists said Labour’s spare money is set to “evaporate”.

The £9.9bn leeway in the Government’s spending plans, known as the “fiscal headroom”, has been wiped out by low growth, high borrowing costs and interest rates.
