Pigeons have an extraordinary ability to find their way home over long distances. Little wonder then that they have been used to deliver news, stock prices and important information during disasters like cyclones, when all other ways of communication looked impossible.

V. Shanker is a pigeon fancier in Bengaluru. Here at his two-storey house in Hennur Gardens, he has constructed a loft to breed pigeons.

Shanker is among a relatively small group of people in India who are into pigeon racing.

One of Shanker’s prized pigeons is called Red Rocket. In April this year, Red Rocket took part in a race, setting off from Delhi’s Signature Bridge. After 9 days of flight, on April 24, Red Rocket arrived at Shanker’s loft, covering a distance 1,741 kilometres at 251 meters per minute.

Red Rocket was declared the winner.
