Rightly or wrongly, a lot of journalists and publishers have come to rely on Twitter and Facebook to promote their work, reach audiences, respond to criticism, and in some cases generate revenue. Twitter has become more erratic after Elon Musk's acquisition, and some believe it is dying — or at least declining in influence. And Facebook has cut funding to the media and made it clear it is no longer interested in giving media companies special treatment.
